Infants and Toddlers

Eat, sleep, poop; hardly subjects of popular literature and a Hollywood movie, but it happens to be what most infants do well. Each of those activities, when properly balanced, helps a baby grow strong and stay on track for normal development.

It’s relevant, then, that findings of a recent study indicate that babies and toddlers who don’t get a good 10 hours of sleep each night often begin to tip the scales – literally. At a time when childhood obesity is epidemic in the U.S., this study points to an often overlooked factor in a child’s physiological development.
Previous research has shown that "people who sleep a good eight hours-plus are more likely to maintain a normal weight than those who sleep less than eight hours a night," National Public Radio reported Tuesday. The study, published in the September issue of the journal Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, "finds that even for infants and preschoolers, a good, long night's sleep may be just as important as diet and physical activity."

Researchers studied government data on nearly 2,000 U.S. kids divided into two groups; ages 1 month to 59 months, and ages 5 to 13 years, with baseline data collected in 1997 and again in 2002.

At the end of the five-year period, they found that the sleep-deprived infants and toddlers in the study group were "nearly more than twice as likely to move from normal weight to overweight, and from overweight to obese," during that time.

"Among the younger children, lack of sufficient nighttime sleep at baseline was associated with increased risk for later overweight or obesity," said a Bloomberg Businessweek report on the study.

"For older children (aged 5-13 years)," the study’s abstract says, "baseline sleep was not associated with subsequent weight status."

Researchers Janice F. Bell and Frederick J. Zimmerman wrote that the findings indicate there's a critical period before age 5, "when nighttime sleep may be important for subsequent obesity status."

"Insufficient nighttime sleep among infants and preschool-aged children appears to be a lasting risk factor for subsequent obesity," the authors concluded.

While the study did not address why sleep-deprived children tend to become overweight, Bell said that less sleep brings certain hormonal changes in the body which can cause a craving for unhealthy foods. She additionally theorized that the kids may just be too tired appropriate exercise and play.

Early Childhood Lab School (ECL)

The Early Childhood Lab School (ECL) is the weekday program for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers at CCFS. It serves as a model early childhood program, a site for research involving young children, and provides an educational experience for students studying child development. The program enrolls 82 children: 10 infants, 12 toddlers, and 60 preschoolers, in four classrooms and three large outdoor play spaces.
Each class is staffed by a Head Teacher with a B.A. in human development or early childhood education, a Program Coordinator with a Masters degree in either field, and four or five undergraduate student caregivers enrolled in our Communication and Interaction with Young Children course. These are upper division UC Davis students with background in human development who allow us to provide individualized attention to children.
Our children's program is based on a philosophy of active learning through play in an enriched environment. We strive to respect every child's own developmental needs and interests. Our curriculum incorporates ideas from a variety of models, including the Reggio Emilia schools of Italy, the High Scope Active Learning Curriculum, principles of the Program for Infant Toddler Care (PITC) and others to create our own eclectic approach, tailored to each age group. Our focus is on children's social and emotional development in a setting that emphasizes nurturing relationships within a culturally diverse school community. Although we do not teach academic skills in a formal way, children are given many opportunities to develop early language and literacy skills, build on math concepts, explore science and nature and learn social and emotional skills that will contribute to their success in later schooling.

Research about child development is an essential part of the ECL. Parents who enroll their children grant permission for their children to be part of the naturalistic observation research that takes place daily. Several times per year parents are asked to consider other research projects that would involve direct interaction with their child. Parents receive a description of each research project approved by our Research Director and sign an informed consent form. Research assistants are supervised by faculty members and by our staff.

Dressing for the Season

Whether it's cold or warm outside, you'll want to protect your infant from the elements. During the cooler months, clothing keeps your infant warm by trapping warm air next to the skin. During warmer periods, clothes serve to protect tender skin and keep your infant cool. The following suggestions will help ensure that your baby can enjoy both summer and winter months safely and comfortably.
For winter, dress baby in three outerwear layers
The following is a scientific approach using layering to keep your infant warm, dry and comfortable. Keep in mind, the layers listed are on top of your infant's undergarments and clothing. Because body heat is rapidly lost through the extremities, be sure to keep your baby's head, feet and hands bundled well. Regulating zippers and adding or subtracting layers will keep your infant from overheating.

First Layer
The first layer should be made of a non-absorbent, loosely woven material that allows any perspiration to be absorbed by the next layer. Because cotton absorbs moisture, it is not recommended for a first outer layer.

Second Layer
The second layer will trap air between the first and third layers, as well as allowing any excess moisture to move to the outermost layer, away from baby's skin. It should be constructed of a light, breathable material such as wool or polyester fleece.

Third Layer
The third layer protects your baby from the elements, such as wind, sleet, snow and rain. The outer layer should also be made of a breathable fabric, but one that is also water and wind resistant. Materials such as polyester and specially-treated nylon are good choices.

Tips For Fun in the Sun
An infant's tender skin is particularly sensitive to the sun's rays. High mid-day temperatures pose another concern. The following tips will keep your infant safe during the warmer months.
Baby clothing for the warmer seasons
Children of all ages should ideally avoid direct sunlight and peak sun hours. If your infant is out in the sun, and if her skin & scalp are exposed, use a sunscreen with SPF-15 or higher and both UVA & UVB protection.
Use insect repellents only as directed on product labels and also check with your pediatrician.
Do not wear perfumes or use fragrant soaps before walking with your infant. This may attract bees and other insects.
Avoid walking in areas where insects may gather, such as in the woods.
In high temperatures and/or humidity, keep your infant indoors.
Venture outdoors before 10 a.m. and after 4 p.m. when the sun is weakest.
Dress your infant in loosely-fitted, tightly-woven fabrics, like cotton.
Choose light-colored clothing over dark to reflect the heat.
A wide brim hat will help protect your infant's face and scalp from the sun.
Use sunglasses that provide UVA and UVB protection.
Avoid walking near bodies of water or sand; they reflect light.
Make sure your infant continues to drink enough liquids to avoid dehydration.

confused baby

A new mother is often confused about which foods to give her baby when the time comes for solid foods. With the wide variety of foods that make good starter foods, finding some that the baby likes should be no problem. The following foods are good starters for a baby.
For most babies the first food is baby cereal mixed with formula or breast milk. Cereal is an excellent starter food because it is easily digested and easy for the baby to eat since it can be made very thin for the first meals. As the baby gets used to eating, the thickness can be increased.
The first vegetables should be mild yellow ones like squash, carrots and sweet potatoes. These veggies are easily digested and babies usually like them.
Yogurt is a very healthy first food and one that many babies like. Plain yogurt is recommended but if the baby doesn’t like it try yogurt with fruit on the bottom. Get yogurt with as low sugar as possible. Check the store brand; it is often lower in sugar than other brands.
Mild fruits such as applesauce, bananas, peaches and pears are good choices and they are foods that babies usually like immediately.
Many pediatricians suggest giving a baby cereal, vegetables and unsweetened yogurt for the first solid foods. Then fruits and sweetened yogurt can be added a little later. This recommendation is based on the theory that introducing sweeter foods later rather than when starting solid foods discourages the development of a sweet tooth.
A baby should be given only one new food at a time and there should be an interval of several days before another new one is given. Following this recommendation allows the mother to determine if there is any food that the baby is allergic to or does not tolerate well. Once the baby has been introduced to the foods above and tolerated them well other vegetables like peas and green beans and meads can be added to the diet. Spinach and broccoli are harder to digest and should be added when the child is older.
When starting to feed solid foods, if the baby is really hungry give him some milk, breast or formula first, then offer the solid foods. That will make him much more likely to try the food. Those first few feedings will be a challenge for the mother as well as the baby; great patience is needed here. Most babies end up with more on their faces and clothes than they eat. Don’t worry; things will get better. This is merely one step in the baby’s learning. At this point the solid food is not the only source of the baby’s nutrition
